St
Peters Kea Club
Keas is the youngest age group in Scouting
and is open to boys and girls 6 to 8 years of age.
The objectives of the Kea section are:
* To learn through fun
* To develop a sense of sharing
* To develop a sense of surroundings through exploration and nature
* To provide a means of personal creative expression
* To give a sense of belonging
Kea Scouts work towards the same goals as
Cubs, Scouts and Venturers, that is, to become better citizens in our
community. Keas is an excellent starting point in Scouting, and most Keas
go onto become Cubs and Scouts.
The St Peter's Kea Club is well structured and
organised and provides the child with a sound grounding by following the
motto and promise, and prepares them for cubs, the next age group in Scouting.
The Kea programme involves socialising, sharing
and learning, in an active, fun and safe environment.
Each term is centred on a theme. Themes in
2006 have been water activities, conservation, farming, and Keeping Healthy
and Fit. We often have people from the community come and give a demonstration
and talk. Some examples are the Department of Conservation who spoke on
the Maui Dolphin, a farmer who bought in Alpacas, a bee keeper, and Sports
Waikato on exercise. We also have visits to different places. Some examples
are the Dairy Goat Co-Operative factory, Karapiro Dam, Airport Garden
Centre, and the Mt. Maungatautari Conservation Area. Two sleep overs are
held each year, where we visit an area and do activities associated with
the area, for example a sleep over to Thames was centred around mining
and the heritage of the area, a sleep over to a rural area centred on
farming. The programme also has a community focus where the Keas plant
trees at the Wainui Reserve at Raglan, an annual event, and making and
then delivering chocolates for people in hospital at Easter time.
All activities are aimed at the Kea age. We
welcome parent involvement in our activities.
The kea weekly session starts and finishes
with a formal ceremony. In between we do games, crafts, and an activity
associated with the terms theme. All sessions are aimed around the Kea
having fun while at the same time meeting the objectives of Kea Scouting.

Notes for parents
As reminders:
Keas is 5:45 7:00 pm on Wednesday nights
Raffle to be part of the raffle costs $2 per term or 20c
per night
Make sure that you drop off and pick up your kea from the hall,
not just from the car. We dont want keas walking unaccompanied between
the
hall and your car.
If any parent (or grandparent) would like to become a leader or
parent help please let one of us know.
Practise the Kea song and yell with the kids. Do it at home, youll
find the kids really enjoy it. It makes them much more confident in leading
the song at Keas.
